RACQUETBALL'S ROAD TO THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES TO ORIGINATE IN HOUSTON
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Northwest Fitness and Sports Club of Houston, Texas will host the 1999 XIII Tournament of the Americas. The event will run from March 26 through April 4. Medals will be awarded in the team, singles and doubles competitions.
21 COUNTRY SALUTE - The defending Tournament of the Americas champion United States National Team will be featured along with 20 other North and South American countries. Among the other nations expected to attend are: 1997 runner-up Canada, world power Mexico, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Venezuela.
ODDS ON FAVORITES - Defending men's singles champion and current world singles titleist Sherman Greenfeld (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) will look to take out current U.S. National singles titleholder Adam Karp (Stockton, Calif., USA). On the women's side, Americans Robin Levine (Sacramento, Calif., USA) and Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, Ill., USA) will need to overcome current world champion Christie Van Hees (Vancouver, B.C., Canada) in order to take home the gold.
DOUBLE YOUR FLAVOR - Identical twin sensations Joy MacKenzie (Santee, Calif., USA) and Jackie Paraiso (El Cajon, Calif., USA) haven't lost a doubles match in over two years. The sisters are the current world, Pan American and Tournament of the Americas champions.
THEY'RE BAAACK - Although the always tough Canadian roster has yet to be finalized, the U.S. veteran doubles team of Doug Ganim (Westerville, Ohio, USA) and Dan Obremski (North Versailles, Pa., USA) appears to be a slight favorite. The Ganim-Obremski duo has earned two world and four U.S. national doubles crowns, while spanning two decades.
